The problem

In 2016 Kuwait had no reliable own-fleet delivery. Abdullah Almutawa saw it from the other side of the counter, running a restaurant: orders arrived late, or cold, or not at all, and no operator would take responsibility for the rider.

The build

Carriage was founded in March 2016 and its apps went live that May, with its own riders and its own dispatch — the expensive answer, and the one that made service a thing the company controlled rather than bought. Expansion followed into Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Egypt — five further markets, each with its own labour and licensing regime.

The exit

Delivery Hero SE (Frankfurt: DHER) announced the acquisition on 29 May 2017 — fourteen months after the company was founded, in Delivery Hero’s own words. The founders stayed: Abdullah joined Delivery Hero’s Global Leadership Council and later became Chairman of Carriage.
